It's National Adopt-a-Senior-Pet Month!

November is 'Adopt-a-Senior-Pet Month', so lets celebrate by looking at why older cats make such great pets, and have a little look at some of our older residents, or as we call them - "Senior Kittizens" who are looking for homes.....

1) Older cats are usually better behaved, and have a good standard of household etiquette - they know that furniture is not for scratching and feet are not made for biting! They are also cleaner and already litter trained, so you don't have to worry about any nasty suprises!

2) They don't go far and many are content to be indoor cats - purrrrfect for people living in flats or on busy roads.

3) Older cats love sofa cuddles and nap time, and will make great snuggling companions. They are the ideal companion to older people who have time, patience and are looking for a lap cuddle buddy.

4) Older cats have already grown their own little personality, so you will know whether or not they are a good fit for you and your home

5) Younger cats often cause mischief out of boredom, whereas older cats are truly quite content to sit quietly and watch the world go by. They are much less demanding and are happy to be on their own.

And remember, if you do adopt one of our senior kittizens, we will provide a full support service including trips to the vets, help with medication etc and we are always at the end of the phone. Older cats are harder to find homes for, so when you re-home one, you truly have made and saved a cats life.

Tigs

Tigs is a beautiful 10 year old girl with gorgeous almond shaped eyes and tortie colouring, who enjoys plenty of cuddles and affection, and would love the chance to have a home of her own. She enjoys a quiet life and would really blossom in a quiet home where she is the only puss.

Felix

Felix is an 11 year old gentleman, and loves being around people, although he isn't so sure about lap cuddles! He is very playful and his favourite past time is chasing a piece of string or wool. He would suit an adult home or one with older children, and is very used to being around dogs so would get on fine living with a pooch.

Felix has had a bowel condition in the past and has recently had a recurrence of the problem and is on daily medication (Prednisilone). However, as a much loved puss, he is insured and the insurance can be transferred to a new owner. He is also neutered, chipped and fully vaccinated.

Yasmine

Yasmine is a very fluffy feline and loves to be picked up and cuddled as often as possible! She is 10 years old, and is our miracle cat. After coming to us in May last year, she was diagnosed with mammary tumours and given 6 months to live. She has always seemed remarkably well for a terminally ill cat so has just had a chest X-ray which has shown no sign of metasteses after all this time; it seems she's one of the lucky 5% of cats whose tumours are benign.

Yasmine is therefore looking to move out of the hospice suite at her foster mum's to a proper home of her own!

Mavis

Well hello there, Mavis! As you can see, Mavis has stunningly big and inquisitive eyes and is a very friendly little puss. Mavis is about 10 years old, and came into us as a stray, and is desperately looking for her forever home. Mavis tolerates the other cats in her foster home so could probably live with another cat in her new home.

Colin (but should be Coleen!)

Colin is 9 years old and is looking for a new, peaceful home where she can have the house to herself, as she prefers to be the only cat and also without young children. Although she sounds like a little madam, she just prefers a quiet life. Colin is so friendly and really enjoys being stroked - particularly having her head and ears tickled whilst she lies stretched out on the bed!

Teddy and Lucy

Teddy and Lucy are 9 years old, and are looking for a new home as their owners are emigrating to Australia! They are both quite shy little cats, so need a quiet and tranquil home without any animals or children, where they can just relax and enjoy their retirement :)

Although they are timid, they are very loving cats and just need someone to spend some time with them to build up their trust. Once you've earned it, you'll never look back! Lucy is a real little lap lover, while Teddy is a 'sit beside you' cat, and both love being stroked, brushed and fussed over. They are very healthy cats and would make wonderful pets.

SUCCESS STORY...

Meet Fluffy! Fluffys owner adopted her when she was 10+, and they have been a match made in heaven. Fluffy has not needed any trips to the vets (apart from vaccinations!) and has been great with their family and younger children. Fluffys owner loves her character and would not hesitate to adopt a mature cat again, Fluffy has not scratched the furniture once :)!

Suki says....

As it's coming up to Bonfire night, Suki wants to share with you her top tips for keeping your feline friends happy during the fireworks celebrations...

- The most important one is to KEEP US INDOORS and CLOSE THE CAT FLAP! Otherwise we might go running off and get lost and/or injured during our frightened state.

- Make sure we have somewhere to hide that we can easily access, under or behind the sofa is usually a favourite!

- Close windows and curtains and have some background noise on to muffle out those sky rockets and fire crackers!

- If we do show signs of being worried or frightened (pacing, miaowing, hiding) please try to leave us alone and not interfer with us too much. Although coaxing us out with treats and toys might seem like the best thing to do, it might actually make us more stressed :(

- Try to remain calm and relaxed, this will prevent us stressing out so much. If we do start calming down and purring, praise our behaviour with a treat and some strokes.

- Finally, try and stay with us if you can. Going out and leaving us might cause us to get stroppy and do naughty, destructive things!

Happy Fireworks Night!
